Generally, design is done based on codes which make the statistical analysis a simple deterministic one.

What are the importance of statistics to civil Engineering?

A common applications of statistics to engineering is in respect to how long one desires to last and how safe.
Say were designing a skyscraper in California. Well we have to take into account earthquakes, but how strong of an earthquake do we want to design for? A wood building will not last for more than 100 years ie rotting an decay o the material. Say a category 9 earthquake only happens once every 10000 years if the design life of your structure is only one hundred years then it does not make sense to design for an event so unlikely because of the cost.
